Lots of Little Changes Add Up to Big Impact – SPRING 2020 ORC WEEK 4

We’re about halfway to the finish of the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge now! I decided on a design plan in Week 1, did a mini demo in Week 2, and had some misadventures in epoxy application in Week 3! Finally this week I got to move on to the window and to the walls! This week is a great example of how many small changes can make a big impact.

To the Window

The sad greige colour of the window frame simply had to go. Taping off took a bit of time but it was worth it for those crisp lines. There was significant overspray beyond the tape line but I knew we would be painting over that so I didn’t bother with extra protection.

Spray painting the window black made such a difference in the space. I knew the black would be sharp and would tie in with the faucet and light fixture nicely.

I also had the idea to add some faux muntins (according to Google that’s the technical term) using black electrical tape. It took me 5 minutes to eyeball the placement of the tape and I fell in love with the French window effect. I may find a more convincing method in the future but I love that I get to test out the look this way. Such an easy, cost effective and quick hack to completely change the look of the space. A real stroke of genius on my part if I do say so myself!

To the Wall

Filling holes and sanding imperfections was tedious but worthwhile for a smooth paint job. We used Behr ULTRA Stain Blocking Paint & Primer in One in an Interior Satin Enamel finish. This paint cost $55. Waaaaay more than I had planned considering my maximum $500 Budget. But that’s what i get for sending my husband to pick up the paint. He said it was recommended by the experts at the paint counter at the hardware store. It boasts an “Antimicrobial-Mildew Resistant Finish” so I hope it’s worth it. We rolled 2 coats of paint on the walls and ceiling over 2 nights. The stuff went on pretty thick and we were scared the can would run out before the job was done but we stretched it as best we could and still have some left for touch ups later on. The colour is ‘Whisper White’ by Behr in case you want to know.

Caulking was another finicky task but I love how it finishes off the countertop and tub surround so nicely.

And you see this faucet I spray painted last week? I installed it all by myself! No leaks and fully functional. I’m so proud of myself for learning something new! Isn’t it looking sharp?

I knew in my head the light fixture should be black to match the faucet but in my heart I wanted it gold. Most of those polled on Instagram and Facebook agreed it should be black too so I went ahead and spray painted it. It needs new bulbs but it’s in!

Everything we did this week – spray painting, caulking, spackling, sanding, painting – are all pretty inexpensive so thankfully they didn’t add up to too much damage to the budget. They were time consuming but so worth it for the result. My vision is starting to come alive!

So here’s where the project list stands right now.

THE PROJECT LIST:

  • Declutter
  • Remove medicine cabinet and mirror
  • Paint the tile baseboards
  • Move light fixture box
  • Patch drywall holes

Lydia

  1. Goodbye, blue walls… For painting inside a bathroom, that was the right choice for the paint. It’s more expensive than regular wall paint, but it’s specifically designed to withstand the humidity in a bathroom. Trust me… it’s well worth it!

    1. Those blue walls were wonderful. Thanks again for your help painting them nearly 5 years ago.

I’m glad we went with the right paint, I just didn’t expect that price! Thankfully I’ve been able to keep the rest of my costs low so it won’t bust the budget. But every dollar counts!
