How to Hang a Curtain Rod Without Brackets

Looking for a quick DIY alternative to wall mounted curtain rod brackets? Look no further! This quick tutorial is different, crafty, creative, resourceful and inexpensive.

All you need:

  • An old leather belt
  • Scissors
  • A needle and thread
  • Drywall screw anchors
  • Screws
  • A drill

Step 1

Take the buckle off the belt and cut the leather in two equal sized pieces

Step 2

Fold the belt around your curtain rod to determine the size of the loop needed.

Tip: The loop should be snug enough to keep the curtain rod in place but loose enough that you can slide the rod in and out to access the curtains.

Step 3

Stitch the belt together to make the loop. (I just used a bit of thread from this emergency sewing kit.)

Tip: You can use the existing holes in the belt trim stitching.

Step 4

Determine where you’d like your curtain rod to hang in relation to your window and wall.

Tip: For height, keep in mind you want the curtains to be about an inch off the floor and for distance from the wall you’ll need enough space for your curtain to gather. It can help to hold your rod, with the curtains, up to see what it will look like.

Step 5

Drill holes for the drywall anchors and insert them. You can use a measuring tape to make sure they’re the same on each side.

Step 6

Screw through the ends of the leather loops into the drywall anchors. You can trim any excess leather if you want.

Step 7

Insert the curtain rod, with the curtains on it into one loop and then the other.

Step 8

Enjoy!

I know these aren’t perfect and there’s room for improvement but I’m so happy that I followed my gut and tried something outside of the box. I love the look, the upcycled materials and the 0$ price tag!

Let me know if you try this DIY yourself. I’d love to see it!
