Derailed by the Derecho – SPRING 2022 ORC WEEK 7

This week saw a lot of progress. The boxes finally started coming together for the built-ins and the mud room was really taking shape. Daniel and I were determined to get things done and were working well as a team – he would measure twice and cut once on the table saw and I would drill pocket holes and assemble the pieces.

This is us moving in the first tall cabinet carcass. It was a beautiful day to be working in the carport…

We had a good rhythm going until a storm hit while we were working on Saturday, May 21.

This is me trying to get the second cabinet carcass inside as rain and wind blew into the carport.

A tornado came through our neighbourhood in 2018 and this looked to be quite similar in the moment. It turns out it was a derecho which is a widespread wind storm that is associated with a fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms.

The view of our dappled willow tree from the dining room.

Many trees were uprooted or broken by the incredible winds. Power was lost for friends and family. We were lucky to only have minor damage to our outdoor furniture and lost internet for a few days. We welcomed other friends and family to come get hot food and coffee, store their frozen goods and charge their devices. I was also involved with organizing volunteers for community clean-up efforts.

One of the many trees to suffer damage from the derecho in our neighbourhood.

So that’s all we could muster this week but there’s so much more to come!

Make sure you follow along on Instagram and Facebook for all the exciting progress. Hopefully there will be much, much more!

Until next week!

Cheers,

Lydia
