The Dappled Willow

Every time I’ve done a One Room Challenge I’ve felt like things were moving along much slower than I anticipated. This one has been no exception.

This week was busy with other activities and visits to and from friends now that the weather has jumped straight to mid-summer temperatures in Ottawa. We only just made progress on Sunday afternoon while the kids napped.

We finally started building boxes for the built-in mudroom. It was tricky for a few reasons…

Space

The opening on the left goes deeper than the opening on the right. I didn’t want to build identical boxes and lose all that space around the corner so calculating the right dimensions for all the boxes wasn’t easy.

Materials

We were fortunate to get some sheets of plywood, particle board and melamine for a great deal from Daniel’s work. The price of lumber and materials is high, as we all know, so I was grateful we could catch a bit of a break even if it meant not all the sides of all the boxes would match in finish. The materials were also different thicknesses so we really had to measure thrice and cut once.

Assembly

Neither one of us is experienced in cabinetry so it took a bunch of research to give me the confidence to take this project on. I got myself a good corner clamp, a level and with my trusty pocket hole jig we got one upper box assembled!

It took some shimming and many string tests and level checks to get the bottom boxes installed too! Face frames to come.

We thought we might use particle board as the seat for the bench but have decided to get some nice plywood for better strength. We’re also thinking we’ll get a bullnose piece for the front of the bench for better comfort when taking a seat.
