Is your bedroom closet small, dark and crowded? So was mine, before I used these 5 simple and affordable ways to improve my closet. Now I absolutely love my closet and I honestly can’t believe it’s mine!
You can use just one idea, or you can use them all! They’re all budget friendly and super impactful. The choice is up to you.
Idea 1: Declutter
Saying goodbye to the things that you don’t need or want is always a good way to improve any space. It may be time consuming and can even be emotionally exhausting but it’s so worthwhile. It’s free too!

Start by tossing damaged goods like items that are stained, ripped, faded or pilled. Then look at fit and style and decide if each piece is really something you want to hold on to. You can donate or sell your old stuff and make way for any new garments that may come along in the future.
If you share your closet with a significant other, check out my post about how I got my husband to declutter his wardrobe too!
Idea 2: Dress up your walls
A fresh coat of paint or some beautiful wallpaper can spruce up even the smallest and darkest of hidden spaces.
Don’t be afraid to try something bold! It’s a closet after all, so not many people will ever see it anyway. Do it for YOU!

At first I tried purple paint, but then I worked up the courage to finally give wallpapering a go for the first time with a lovely and affordable Graham & Brown wallpaper. It was a little tricky but I’m glad I started with a small space like a closet. Even though it’s not perfect I am so in love with the final result!
Idea 3: Closet Organizer
A closet organizer can help make the most of the limited space. There are many providers out there who provide free mock-ups through their websites so you can customize shelves, drawers and racks and visualize the unit before purchasing.
Building your own closet organizer is an option if your handy, but you may find it easier and even more affordable to buy a flat pack kit.

The one we bought by ClosetMaid was the best one for the configuration, look and price point that I found in my research. It was easy to assemble and I love the result. No more wasted space!
Idea 4: Lighting
If you have a small closet with no hard wired lighting then I have an easy alternative for you. Say goodbye to the days of picking your outfits in the dark! This motion sensing light we picked up at Home Depot is affordable, rechargeable and easy to install.

Every time you open the closet doors the light will turn on so you can actually see your clothes and it automatically turns off if it no longer detects motion. So even if you leave the closet doors open and leave the room the battery won’t be draining. It feels so luxurious even though it was an inexpensive find.
Idea 5: Seasonal Storage
Whether you’ve decluttered or not, you can gain extra space on the rack by storing out of season items elsewhere. You can put them in a bag, suitcase or a shallow bin and place it under your bed until that season comes back around.

So there you have it! I hope you found these tips helpful. I wish you the best of luck on your journey to a better closet!
Perhaps one day you too will stand in front of your closet, not because you’re wondering what to wear, but because you’re impressed by what you have accomplished.
